What a machine shop actually needs
"This gauge just failed calibration. What did it measure?"
A micrometer comes back out of tolerance and every part accepted on it since the last good calibration is potentially suspect. On paper that means cross-referencing calibration records against inspection records against job travelers, by hand, while product may already be at a customer.
In QSOD: every inspection record carries the gauge that took it. The equipment register tracks intervals, due dates and as-found readings, and a failed calibration links straight to what it touched. The uncomfortable question gets an answer in minutes instead of a day.
"Which revision was on the floor when we ran that lot?"
Document control is the most common source of audit findings, and the cause is almost always the same (a superseded print or work instruction stayed at the machine).

In QSOD: nonconformance records with disposition (use as is, rework, repair, scrap, return to supplier) authorization captured, and a link through to corrective action when the cause needs eliminating. Including effectiveness verification, which is the step most systems and most paper processes quietly skip.
"Where did this material come from?"
In QSOD: approved supplier list, certificates on file, receiving inspection against the PO, and traceability from the heat or lot number on the cert through to the parts you made from it.

Audit Day
Your registrar sits down and starts asking what evidence you hold against each clause. In most shops that is two weeks of preparation beforehand and a nervous morning of retrieval on the day.
QSOD generates a dated, clause-by-clause audit-readiness report for every requirement, the records behind it, and an honest mark where records do not yet exist. Appendix A lists the actual records, so nothing in the report rests on an assertion.
It shows you where you are exposed before an auditor does. That is more useful than a report telling you everything is fine.
